This is a deep, dark blue hige-tsumugi (whisker-weave silk) ensemble. The fabric features hige-ito (whisker threads) and the slubs characteristic of tsumugi silk. The origin is likely Nishijin, Kyoto weaving. I recall that around 1970, when I worked at a kimono wholesaler in Muromachi, a set of a tsumugi kimono and a hige-tsumugi haori (outer jacket) was sold in a paulownia wood box. Upon opening the lid and lifting the thin paper, I was surprised by the freshness of the kimono and haori fabrics. Recently, these finished sets are rarely seen, and seeing them again after a long time brings a renewed sense of freshness. Although it is a thick fabric, the tsumugi material has a smooth texture. Tsumugi threads can break during the spinning process, and when they are tied together, they create uneven, slubbed threads. Hige-tsumugi is said to have originated from fabrics woven by incorporating the threads from untied fishing nets used for catching carp and crucian carp in Lake Biwa, or by connecting other leftover threads as weft. It is said to have become popular because the knots of varying lengths and thicknesses that protruded from the fabric created an aesthetically pleasing texture. Recently, perhaps due to a renewed appreciation for the quality of hige-tsumugi ensembles, they are being produced in polyester. Unfortunately, production in pure silk seems to have ceased. The lining of the kimono is made of fine-count, lustrous cotton called Kanekin in a dark red color, and the lining of the haori is a satin fabric depicting a daimyo procession at the foot of Mt. Fuji (photos 17, 18). Measurements (in cm): Kimono Length (from center back): 150.5 Sleeve to Center Back (Yuki): 68 Sleeve Width: 33.5 Sleeve Length: 53 Back Width: 30 Front Width: 26.5 Haori Length: 93.5 Haori Yuki: 68.5 Recommended for individuals around 180 cm tall with a sturdy build. The sleeve length (Yuki) might be slightly short. There is a darkened stain approximately 51 cm above the hem of the kimono (photos 1, 5-8). The outer fabric of the haori appears to be free of stains, but there are dye splashes on the haori lining. This seems to be due to insufficient steaming or rinsing after dyeing to fix the color. (Photos 10-12, 14-16) We have checked for stains and dirt as thoroughly as possible, but there may be oversights. We appreciate your understanding. These are images taken with a digital camera.
